Excerpts from How I Got Lucky and Bumped into God
Chapter II, Contemplations II
We share something in common. It is a moment we experience in our lives when we become aware of a feeling - a vague yet persistent and deeply intuitive feeling. We don't know exactly why it's there nor do we know where it comes from, but its existence is undeniable . . . What is this mysterious feeling? It is a sense that there is something terribly wrong.
Chapter IV, The Rite of Service
"You want suggestions for how to get rid of your depression?" I asked her loudly. "That's easy! Wear nothing but brightly colored clothes for now on. Watch only comedies on TV and in the movies. Avoid watching or listening to the news. Take dancing classes with some good-looking Latin instructors. Get your hair and nails done nice. Travel somewhere you always wanted to go but haven't been to yet. Hire a buff male personal trainer at a health club. Every night before you go to sleep, think of five things that day that you are thankful for. And lastly, go out and get yourself . . . you know . . . get yourself . . ." I said, winking one eye conspicuously. "Get myself what?" she asked. "Oh, for heaven's sake. Get yourself laid!"
Chapter VI, Meeting the Almighty
I froze in place. With a sudden feeling of intuition, I knew this had to be the guy. I sat back down and stared at him. "Who are you?" "I am the Alpha and the Omega." I pointed my finger at him. "You're God!" He seemed pleased that I recognized him. "Ah," he said with a good-natured smile. "You've heard of me."
Chapter IX, Evil
"Did you watch the news on TV last night?" . . . Al shook his head no. "The news carries the blade of Satan," he said. "He pierces you with it and then pours into the wound the venom of the serpent . . . If you wish to strike a blow against Satan, take your TV and shatter it into a thousand pieces!" "If I do that," I asked, "how the heck am I going to watch sports?"
Chapter X, Divine Intervention
"What did she say?" I asked the daughter. "Don't mind her," she replied apologetically. "My mother suffers from dementia." "What did she say?" I repeated. "Why is she so frightened?" The daughter smiled sheepishly but did not answer. Annoyed, I asked again, this time louder, "What did she say?" The daughter frowned. "She said that the shadow of death is behind you."
Chapter XI, Fang of the Serpent
And Satan thundered in on his stallion Smoke billowing from his nostrils Armor shining in the dark night And faced the Warrior of God Who said unto Satan, "F-ck you and the horse you rode in on."
Chapter XII, Temptation
She unhooked her bra, pulled the straps off her shoulders, and tossed it away from us. She then pulled down her white dress and let it slip from her hips to the floor. She stepped out of her high heels and stood before me naked, her lust sprouting like an orange flame burning between her thighs. I slid my hand between her legs, interlaced my fingers in her soft pubic hair, and pulled her closer to me. She gasped pleasurably and kissed me passionately when our lips met. "I want you to take me," she whispered.
Chapter XIII, The Last Lunch
We walked across the park toward the water's edge near the area where sailboats were moored. The boats bobbed up and down in the rough water. We could hear the clanking of ropes and hitches against the sail masts. We stopped for a while and stood in silence watching the storm swirl around us. After a minute or two, I turned to watch him gazing into the distance. His face reflected a deep serenity, the serenity of a dying man who has made his peace with the world. I couldn't help but feel a deep affection for him. As I stared at him, a sensation of profound love spread from my heart like a billowing white cloud until it filled me. I felt like crying. But I didn't. I held it back. But, it's okay. It's natural, of course. It's natural to love your Father.
Chapter XIV, The Final Match
He looked to his right, over to the calm water of the harbor. "If you look long enough out there, Tony, what do you feel?" "A sense of peacefulness," I answered. "Peace. You look for peace. But it's right there in front of you, just one breath away."
Chapter XV, Revelation
"You have known for quite some time now; haven't you, Tony? You have known that there is something terribly wrong with the world you have been born into. You have sensed that there is something hidden from you. But, you don't know what it is or how to find it. And yet, you sense the reality behind the illusion that is your life. You sense that the truth is just beyond your grasp." I nodded my head in agreement. "Your intuition is correct," he said. "So you search for the truth. You search to find what is missing. But your search is often fruitless. And all you are left with is the feeling that there is something wrong with this world and that there is something missing in your life."
